Alice Springs

Traditional homeland of the Arrente people, who called it Mparntwe (pronounced mbarn-twa). Alice Springs is the closest town to the geographic center of the Australian continent, almost 1200 km from the nearest coastline and 1500 km from the nearest major cities, Darwin and Adelaide. Alice Springs had a population of 29000 during the 2001 census.
Until the early 1930s, the town was named Stuart. Alice Springs was the name of the site now known as the Telegraph Station.
Temperatures in the town can rise above 40 C (104-108 F) in summer, while winter nights sometimes drop to -7 C (19 F). The average annual rainfall is 275 mm.
